Since time immemorial teaching has been one of the most respected professions in the society. Teachers are responsible for shaping the skill and aspirations of the future flag bearers of the society.

A career in teaching is not only satisfactory but also financially rewarding now-a-days and with rising awareness about education, the necessity of well-qualified teachers is ever increasing.

Skill-set required:

Before striving for the certifications and exams, it’s better to test one’s aptitude towards this career stream. Following are the pre-requisites for this profession.

Right from kindergarten to university, teachers and scholars are needed at every step of educational life. Following are some of the various roles available for teaching aspirants

1. Pre-primary education:

Job Responsibility: Teaching of children between the age group 3-5 years.

Skills and Certification: Some of the courses for pre-primary include:

  • Nursery Teacher Training (NTT)
  • Primary Teacher Training (PTT)
  • Diploma in Education (D.Ed).

2. Primary education: Teaching of children between the age group of 6 - 12 years in Classes (1-5).

Skills and Certification: Some of the courses for primary education include:

  • Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.),
  • Primary Teacher Training programme
  • Diploma or certificate in basic teachers’ training of not less than two year duration

3. High school education: Teaching of children between the age group of 13-16 years, from classes 6 and above.


  • Graduation with minimum 55% + Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.)
  • Qualification in Teachers Eligibility Test (TET).

D Ed. (Diploma in teaching education)

2 year diploma program

12th pass as a minimum qualification

NTT (Nursery Teacher Training):

1 year Diploma in Nursery Teacher Training program

12th pass as a minimum qualification

PTT (Primary Teacher Training)

2 year regular program for teaching primary school children

12th pass as minimum qualification

B El. Ed (Bachelor of Elementary Education)

3 year under-graduate programme for training teachers for teaching children from classes I to VIII

12th pass as minimum qualification

B.Ed. (Bachelor in Education

2-years degree program now-a-days compulsorily for aspirant teachers

Bachelor’s degree in Arts or science stream (B.A. Or B.Sc.) as a minimum qualification

Description of various examinations:

TET (Teacher Eligibility Test): Every state conducts its own TET exam at the primary and secondary levels of teaching. These tests are conducted by NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) after passing D.Ed. or B.Ed.

The test is mandatory for getting teaching jobs in government schools from Class 1 to Class 8.

CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test): CTET is conducted by central government. After qualifying for the exam a candidate is consider eligible for teaching in primary and elementary school, anywhere in India

Pattern of the exam:

Both these exams consist of two papers for 2 sets of aspirants:

  • Paper 1- It is meant for teachers opting for Class 1 to Class 5
  • Paper 2 - for Class 6 to Class 8

The syllabus of the exam primarily consists of Child Development and Pedagogy, Mathematics, Language, Environmental/ Social Science. Pattern of the papers till now are MCQ (multiple choice question) based.

However, detailed published notification needs to be refereed for specificities in exam pattern and syllabus.

National Eligibility Test (NET) – The university teaching job is one of the most coveted jobs for this stream for which qualification in National Eligibility Test (NET) along with a post-graduation degree is compulsory. Candidates have the option to give the test only for Assistant professor or Junior research fellowship as well. Though exam is same, the cut-off in both cases is different.

The candidates have the option to select their choice of subject, on the basis of which syllabus differs.

The demand for good teachers is all the more in today’s time. As a career Teaching offers a wide range of choices and a defined growth for aspirants with right aptitude. However, one needs to be well prepared for qualification in the examinations mentioned, for a defined start in the sector.
