Preparing for the English language section for competitive exams is frightening for many aspirants. More so because English is not our first language and hence naturally many people are not very well versed with it. However, if you want, you can always work towards learning the language and using it proficiently to your advantage.
Here is a systematic guide for increasing your expertise in this language.
Step 1: Start Reading Newspaper daily - Reading an English newspaper daily is a habit that pays a lot in the long run as far as proficiency in the English language is concerned. Though it seems tedious in the beginning, you need to stick to it. Start with reading the editorial page. Underline and practice all the unfamiliar words. You can also try to make a summary of every article read. It helps in putting the information together coherently.
Step 2: Vocabulary exercises - Build your vocabulary. Moreover, this is not one day or week project. It has to be done daily and religiously. Start with baby steps. Read an article and mark all the difficult words. Look into them thoroughly and check whether they are used as a noun, adjective, or verb. Check their synonyms and antonyms. Explore the different contexts in which the words can be used. The idea is to know and practice the word in its totality.
Step 3: Improve your grammar - Pick a good grammar book or take help of an expert. Improving grammar is necessary. Expertise in any language cannot be attained without a good knowledge of its grammar. Moreover, this has to be done under the guidance of an expert because once you pick up the basics, it serves you lifelong.
Step 4: Practice speed reading - This part has to come after you have started practicing the earlier three steps. Speed-reading or skimming is reading quickly, noticing the important points, and leaving out the unimportant information or data. This is essential to quickly glance through comprehensions and check whether you would like to attempt in the exam. You can practice this skill while doing your daily paper reading.
Step 5: Practice speaking - Communicating in the language is as much as important like reading and writing. The ultimate purpose of learning a language is to be able to communicate in that. So even though you are feeling shy or less fluent, do try to communicate in English. Start with your family and friends. Watch standard news channels to work on your pronunciation and sentence formation. You can watch a few English movies with subtitles to pick up the pronunciation.
If you are following a disciplined learning regimen, improvement is just a matter of time. So what are you waiting for?
Start right away.
